University of Louisville, Department of Emergency Medicine, welcomes J. Jeremy Thomas, MD, MBA, as new Professor and Chair. Dr. Thomas was Professor and Executive Vice Chair in the Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Alabama School of Medicine (Birmingham, AL), he was also the Director of Emergency Services and the Director of Observation Medicine for UAB Hospital. He also served as Assistant Chief Medical Officer of Emergency Services and Sepsis for UAB for Hospital.
He completed medical school at The University of South Alabama (Mobile, AL), and Emergency Medicine residency training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (Birmingham, AL). Dr. Thomas completed an Emergency Medicine Cardiovascular Emergencies Fellowship at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA). He served as Emergency Medicine faculty at the University of Virginia from 2006-2007, and at UAB from 2007- 2020.
Initially his career was focused on resident education, serving in assistant and associate resident director positions. During this time Dr. Thomas received many awards in recognition of mentorship. Later in Dr. Thomas’ career he was much more focused on emergency department and hospital administration/clinical operations. Dr. Thomas served as the medical director of the University Emergency Department, as well as working to launch and co-direct the Outpatient Clinical Decision Unit (OCDU).
